How to Know the Age of Your Bearded Dragon (2022 Guide)

Like most animals, baby bearded dragons require a more specialized diet and grooming routine than adults. However, it is not easy to provide this treatment if you are not sure how old your dragon is. It can be difficult to determine the age of your beardie, which is true for most reptiles.

Fortunately, there are several things you can do to determine the age of your bearded dragon—or at least estimate it. In this article, we will show you several methods for determining the age of your pet so that you can take better care of it.

1. Contact Breeder

For a more accurate age estimate, you should contact the breeder. Breeders were the only ones who knew when the dragon was born, so they would be the only ones who could give an accurate date.

However, this is not easy. Not all pet stores provide information about who their breeder is, so buyers are unlikely to contact them. It can also be difficult for the breeder to know which beardie you are buying. There is not always information to trace dragons from breeder to buyer.

2. Ask Who You Buy It From

Sometimes, the store you purchased from will be able to provide you with age information. This may not always be possible, however. Some do not keep records of the dragon’s age. They may have the date they received it, which can help you calculate the animal’s current age. Sometimes, the store will have the exact date of birth if the animal came with the papers from the breeder.

This can be a bit of a hit-or-miss. Some people will have a lot of information about dragons, including health information. Others will have the minimum information. Some shops will provide breeder contacts.

3. Measure your Bearded Dragon

The bearded dragons all grew at the same rate. For this reason, you can use their measurements to determine their age if they are under about a year old. Once they reach a year, they don’t grow much anymore, so this method becomes less helpful. Use a tape measure to measure your bearded dragon, preferably while they’re still concentrating on something else.

Here’s a quick chart to compare the length of your bearded dragon. While this chart will work for most bearded dragons, some races grow at different rates, so this is not a foolproof method. Beards that are not fed and placed properly may not grow properly, so they will not line up correctly with this chart either.

  • 3-4 inches = 0-1 months

  • 5-9 inches = 2 months

  • 8-11 inches = 3 months

  • 9-12 inches = 4 months

  • 11-16 inches = 5-6 months

  • 13-20 inches = 7-8 months

  • 16-22 inches = 9-12 months

4. Determine Sexual Maturity

If your dragons are sexually mature, they are at least 8-12 months old. Otherwise, they will be younger than this. To determine sexual maturity, you need to examine the bulge under the dragon’s tail. Before sexual maturity, there will be no bulge at all. You can also determine gender based on this information.

This method works as a last resort. If you can’t determine your dragon’s age through other means, you’ll need to base it on sexual maturity, as long as they haven’t reached it yet. If the lump is not present, you will have to wait for it to appear. Once you see it, your bearded dragon is about 8-12 months old.
